Before You Begin
Locate the following information on your card — you'll need all three during activation:
- 16-digit card number — printed on the front
- Expiration date — on the front (MM/YY format)
- CVV / Security code — 3 digits on the back of the card
Method 1: Activate Online
- Visit GiftCardMall.com/mygift Open a browser and go to giftcardmall.com/mygift. This is the same portal used for both Visa and Mastercard gift cards.
- Enter your card number Type the full 16-digit Mastercard number from the front of the card.
- Provide expiration date and CVV Fill in the month/year expiry and the 3-digit security code from the back of the card.
- Set your billing ZIP code Enter the 5-digit ZIP code you want to link to this card. This ZIP is what you'll enter as your billing ZIP whenever you shop online. Write it down — you'll need it.
- Complete activation Click the Activate button. A confirmation screen will appear. Activation is typically instant, though some cards may take up to 15 minutes to fully process.
Method 2: Activate by Phone
Call the toll-free number on the back of your card. If you can't find it, GiftCardMall's main line is 1-877-426-2551. An automated system will prompt you to:
- Enter your 16-digit card number
- Enter your expiration date and CVV
- Choose and confirm a billing ZIP code
Once complete, the system will confirm that your card has been activated.
How to Use Your Mastercard Gift Card
In-store
Present your card at checkout and select "Credit" (not debit) at the terminal. You will not need to enter a PIN for credit transactions. If the terminal prompts for a ZIP code, enter the billing ZIP you registered.
Online shopping
At checkout, enter the card number, expiration date, and CVV just like a regular credit card. For billing address, you only need the ZIP code to match — the street address can be anything, but using your actual address is safest.
Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay)
Most GiftCardMall Mastercard gift cards can be added to Apple Wallet or Google Pay. Open your wallet app, tap "Add Card," and follow the prompts. You may be asked for the CVV during setup.
What If My Purchase Is More Than My Balance?
Mastercard gift cards cannot be overdrawn. If your purchase exceeds the remaining balance:
- In-store: Tell the cashier your gift card balance before they run it, and ask to split the transaction. Pay the gift card amount, then pay the rest with another card or cash.
- Online: Check if the retailer supports split payment at checkout. If not, consider spending your gift card balance at a store that accepts partial payments first.
Card Expiration and Fees
Your Mastercard gift card does not expire, but funds may be subject to a monthly maintenance fee after 12 consecutive months of inactivity. Always check the fee schedule printed on the card packaging or available at the GiftCardMall website. To avoid fees, use the card regularly or spend the balance before a long dormant period.
